About Course Groups
Your instructor may create groups of students within your course. Groups usually consist of a smaller number of students in a course, such as study groups, discussion groups, or project groups. Your instructor may choose to place you in groups or allow you to select the group you want to join. Additionally, your instructor will choose which communication and collaboration tools are available to your group.

Group Work in Ultra Courses
Your instructor may create group Assignments, Tests, or Discussions where you can collaborate with other students.
Ultra Group Assignments and Tests
You may access a group Assignment or Test within your course group or in your Course Content. If your Assignment or Test has been assigned to your group, you will see the name of your group displayed below the title.
While all group members can access and edit the group Assignment or Test, only one person can edit at a time. Once you are ready, select one group member to submit the Assignment or Test. You will receive a pop-up message to confirm that you want to submit on behalf of the group.
For more information, refer to the Submit Group Assignments (Ultra Courses) support article.
Ultra Group Discussions
Your instructor may create course groups or groups created just for Discussions. If your Discussion has been assigned to your group, you will see the name of your group displayed below the title.
Group Discussions are private between group members and the instructor. You cannot see other groups' Discussions.
For more information, refer to the Group Discussions (Ultra Courses) support article.
Groups in Original Courses
Original Course Groups
Depending on how your instructor has set up your course, you may be able to access your course group from a link within the course menu, a link in the My Groups area below your course menu, or a link posted directly in a content area.
The most common way to access a course group is from a link either within the course menu or at the bottom of your course menu.
There are several tools available for course groups and your instructor may choose which tools are available to you:
- File Exchange: Group members can use the File Exchange (Original Courses) to quickly and easily share files with each other.
- Group Blog: All group members can add blog entries and comment on each other's entries. All course members can read and comment on a group blog, but they can't make posts unless they are members of the group.
- Group Discussion Board: Group Discussion Boards are separate from the regular course discussion board and only accessible by group members. Members of a group can create and manage their own forums for discussion and collaboration. For more information, refer to the Group Discussions (Original Courses) support article.
- Group Journal: Group members can create journal entries to share their thoughts with each other and the instructor.
- Group Task: Group members can create tasks to define and separate the workload.
- Group Wiki: Group members can create and edit wiki content.
- Send Email: The email tool allows group members to email each other. The recipient list is automatically populated with group members, so you can quickly select all or only some of them. For more information, refer to the Send Email (Original Courses) support article.
For more information about working in groups, refer to the Groups (Original Courses) support article or watch the Work in Student Groups (Original Courses) video tutorial.
Submit Group Assignments in Original Courses
If your instructor has created a Group Assignment, you will collaborate with your group members to create the assignment. One person from the group will then submit the assignment via the Group Assignment tool.
For more information and detailed instructions, refer to the Submit Group Assignments (Original Courses) support article.
