Automatic Captioning
VoiceThread will automatically add captions to your audio or video slides and comments using automatic speech recognition (ASR). The captioning processes begins as soon as you save your recording and should appear in 5-10 minutes, depending on the length of your recording. Captions are created based on the audio track and the content is assumed to be in English.
In general, automatic captions average around 80% accuracy and this may vary depending on the audio quality, clarity of speech, background noise, etc. We recommend using the generated captions as a starting point - you will want to edit them for accuracy.
View Captions
While viewing a VoiceThread, turn on closed captioning by clicking on the “CC” button in the bottom-right corner of the VoiceThread and selecting English. Currently all VoiceThread captions are in English.
Once turned on, all captions will display along the bottom of the slide.
Edit Captions
Once a caption has been added to a slide or comment in VoiceThread you can edit it to make any changes or correct any mistakes. Only the person who created the VoiceThread or who has edit rights to the VoiceThread can edit the captions.
Edit Captions on Central Media Slides
Navigate to the slide that contains the audio or video file and click on the CC button in the bottom-right corner of the VoiceThread. This will open a menu. Click on the Captions button beneath the media preview, and select Edit Captions.
Make any changes using the text boxes on the right and click Save to save your changes.
Edit Captions on Comments
Start playing the comment you want to caption and click on the CC button near the bottom-right corner of the comment.
This will open a media preview. Click on the Captions button at the bottom of the page and select Edit Captions.
Make any changes using the text boxes on the right and click Save to save your changes.
