What's wrong with uploading media directly into myLesley?
As a best practice, you should not upload media (video or audio) files directly into myLesley. Uploading videos directly into myLesley can cause a multitude of issues including:
- Compatibility: Whichever format you use for your video is the format that students will have to view, regardless of their device or browser. This can cause compatibility and playback issues.
- Accessibility: Videos uploaded directly into myLesley will not be captioned, leading to issues with accessibility.
- File Size: Uploading large files into your course requires students to then download large files, which may be a strain on their system. Additionally, videos tend to be large files and will contribute to the overall size of your course. Courses have a 5 GB data limit and communities have a 50 MB data limit.
- Privacy and Security: Videos can be downloaded and shared, leading to potential security and privacy concerns.
How do I share videos with my students?
The best way to share videos with your students will depend on whether it is video you have created or video that others have created.
Media you created
If you have created media content or will be creating your media content, we recommend uploading your content to myLesley by using Kaltura Media. Kaltura provides a lot of advantages, both to you and your students, including:
- Compatibility: Kaltura will accept a large amount of video types and automatically convert it to versions your students can view, regardless of their device.
- Accessibility: Kaltura will automatically caption your video content. Accurate captioning of audio and video content ensures that people who are Deaf and hard of hearing can understand your content. Additionally, captions are very useful to non-native English speakers, viewers watching in a sound-sensitive environment such as a library, can help viewers with learning disabilities or attention deficits maintain concentration, and can help all learners improve comprehension.
- File Size: Students do not have to download content. Instead, the video is hosted on Kaltura's servers and streams through myLesley. Additionally, uploading your video to Kaltura does not impact your overall course file size (all courses have a 5 GB data limit and communities have a 50 MB data limit).
- Privacy and Security: Kaltura videos cannot be downloaded by anyone who is not the owner, nor can they be shared on other websites.
You may use Kaltura to upload media you have already created or record a new video from your webcam or by recording your screen. Instructions for using Kaltura may be found here:
- Upload and post a video in myLesley via Kaltura Media
- Uploading to Kaltura from a Mobile Device
- Use Kaltura Capture to record any combination of your screen, camera, and audio

Media created by others
If you are not the creator of the media or do not have permissions from the publisher, you cannot upload the media into your course. This includes copies of DVDs that you have purchased. If the content exists on the web (ex YouTube, PBS, the library media databases), you may either link to it or embed it in your course.
Do not download media from the internet or library databases and and upload it into myLesley or Kaltura as this may violate copyright.
How can my students share videos with me?
Students can create their videos and share them with you and their classmates using Kaltura Media.
Student Created Media
Students may use Kaltura to upload media they have already created or record a new video from their webcam or by recording their screen. Students can upload their videos into a Discussion, Blog/Journal, Wiki, or Assignment.
Instructions for using Kaltura may be found here:
- Upload and post a video in myLesley via Kaltura Media
- Uploading to Kaltura from a Mobile Device
- Use Kaltura Capture to record any combination of your screen, camera, and audio

What's the best way to share PowerPoints?
Narrated PowerPoints
If you created a narrated PowerPoint, save your file as a video and upload it to Kaltura. This will ensure that your video is easily viewable by your students, whether or not they have PowerPoint installed on their devices.
PowerPoints with images and/or embedded media
Unless there is a need to zoom in on the images to view details, you do not need to share high-resolution images in your PowerPoint. Before uploading your presentation into myLesley, reduce your file size by compressing your images and media files. This will create a smaller file for your students to download and access. Optionally, you can save your PowerPoint as a PDF to reduce file size.
- Reduce the file size of a picture in Microsoft Office
- Compress your media files (PowerPoint)
- Create accessible PDFs
How do I share Zoom recordings with my students?
The best way to share your Zoom recording with your students depends on how you recorded your meeting and how you want/need to share these recordings with your students. For more information on recording your Zoom meetings see Zoom: Getting Started with Recording
Recording in the cloud
If you recorded your Zoom meeting in the cloud, simply send a link to the recording to your students. They can then watch the recording online at their convenience. Please note that students cannot download cloud recordings.
Recording locally and sharing via myLesley
If you recorded your Zoom meeting locally (to your computer), upload the recording to myLesley via Kaltura Media so that your students can watch the recording from within myLesley. Please note that students cannot download cloud recordings.
Recording locally and sharing via OneDrive
If you record your Zoom meeting locally you can also upload your video to OneDrive and share it with your students from there. Students can view the video online in OneDrive and, depending on the settings you choose, they will be able to download the recordings.

I have to share large files or accept large files from my students. What's the best way to do this?
In some cases you may need to share large files or accept large files from your students, including hi-res images or videos in their original format. In these cases, Kaltura may not be your best option. Instead, we would recommend using OneDrive. OneDrive allows for faster uploads and downloads and won't count against your course quota (all courses have a 5 GB data limit and communities have a 50 MB data limit).
